Tips and points to consider before buying your garage door.

garage doors pretoriaUnlike in the past there are a variety of options available in terms of materials and designs when it comes to garage doors. It is very important to choose wisely when selecting your door as the right material and design will contribute significantly to the over-all appearance of your home, the lifespan of the product and ultimately to the value of your investment.

If price is your only consideration when deciding on your new garage door you are in dangerous territory.

Here are some facts to consider.

As the garage door is usually the largest moving object in the home, it has the potential to be hazardous or even life threatening if inferior materials are used and if the door is not mechanically maintained regularly. This is why it is important to consider the quality of the materials used and the maintenance requirements before you make a decision.

Typically there are three main elements to a garage door.

  • First is the door itself.
  • Secondly and most important is the hardware for e.g. tracks, pulleys cables springs and hinges etc.

The hardware is the operating system which includes all the parts that holds the door together and facilitates the opening and closing motion of the door. For the door to operate safely and smoothly the hardware must be of a high standard.

Beware of unscrupulous suppliers who will install inferior quality (usually imported) hardware which can cause a door to fail and even fall out causing damage to your vehicle or even physical harm to a person not to mention the security risk of not being able to secure your home at night.

The third element is the door operator.

As with hardware it is important to choose a reliable, preferably locally manufactured, motor to insure after sales service and availability of spare parts to avoid having to replace the entire operator due to the unavailability of spare parts. Make sure it adheres to all the necessary safety standards as the downward force of a garage door can be life threatening if a person is trapped under a door with an inferior safety function.

Here are the most commonly used types of garage doors available in South Africa:

Wooden overhead sectional doors:

Meranti wood is the most popular wood used because it is the most affordable and suitable for our weather conditions. Bear in mind though that the quality of meranti wood may vary considerably. Good quality meranti is heavier and denser than seligna or pine which makes it more stable and less susceptible to warping and cracking.

Make sure that your door was manufactured in a reputable factory which will be more likely to employ proper carpentry principles with less likelihood of nasty surprises like separation of joints etc.

The advantage of wood is that nothing will beat the warmth and the natural appearance of a high quality wooden garage door. It is also available in a wider variety of designs and can be personalised with carved designs and ornaments.

From a maintenance point of view it is important to oil the door regularly with a good quality exterior oil and to service your door regularly. The intervals will depend on sun and moisture exposure and how often the door is used.

Although a wooden door requires regular maintenance it is relatively easy and involves little effort. Just adding a coat of oil once every 3 to 6 months and having it serviced once a year is a small price to pay for preserving the beauty of a natural product that will last for as long as you care for it.

Steel Aluzinc or Zincalume overhead sectional doors

The advantage of aluzinc is its affordability, light weight, low maintenance and the modern minimalist appearance it offers.

Beware of cheap imports though. You may have a problem with finding replacement parts if the importer stopped importing your specific product and cheaper versions may not last as long as you would expect. A high quality aluzinc door will have a more luxurious finish and will stand the test of time for much longer, especially in coastal areas where the elements are more challenging.

An original aluzinc door will need very little maintenance.

The high resistance to the elements of the aluzinc protection will ensure UV protection and resistance to rust etc. All you have to do is to give it a wash from time to time. In coastal areas, especially with properties facing the sea, more regular rinsing of salt deposits will be necessary. Mechanically we recommend a service at least once a year if the door is used regularly.

Aluminium overhead sectional doors

Aluminium garage doors has all the advantages of aluzinc with added advantages. They are made from extruded sections which are thicker and sturdier than aluzinc. The sections are anodised or can be epoxy coated to almost any colour and in general it is a much higher quality product. Bear in mind that although reasonably affordable aluminium will be a little more expensive than aluzinc.

Maintaining your aluminium door will be more or less the same as with the aluzinc door.

Chromadek Roll-up doors

These doors are generally used in the single door option as a budget door for domestic use, in complex developments and in storage units. It has the same advantages of aluzinc although not as sturdy and is only available in one design. Chromadek Roll-up doors are also used in situations where continuous headroom space is not possible or where overhead fixing is not viable. It can also be very effective as a double option in which case a thicker material is used. This door is sturdier and is known as a light industrial door.

There are various manufacturers of chromadek roll-up doors varying in levels of quality. Make sure that your door is fully automatable, has a strong locking mechanism and that the guide rails are sturdy and galvanised.

Tip-up garage doors

Tip-up garage doors are available in wood and aluzinc. This mechanism is effective with low headroom applications but limits your drive-through space as it swings through the opening with the door partially outside in the open position.
